Despite coming quicker than expected, the fall season is finally here! Just like spring, fall is also a great time to reassess your wardrobe and decide what must stay, what must go, and of course, what new pieces should be introduced this season. Here are a few styles that will definitely spark your interest and be a worthwhile investment in your personal image this fall.
Emerald Green
Look out Wizard of Oz and move over Dorothy Gale! Emerald green is back and is making a huge appearance in the fashion world this fall season. Yes, that’s right – this dynamic colour is something you should be looking to add to your wardrobe.
If you are daring and love the public attention, then the bold choice of emerald green would be ideal in a well-tailored two-button suit. As well, emerald green in a double-breasted suit with a peek lapel would be perfect.
To tone it down, a sport coat or button-down shirt with a simple plaid pattern will also carry this colour nicely. And, of course, we can’t forget that one of the best ways to infuse colour into your wardrobe is by accessorizing – silk or wool knitted ties, a scarf, pocket square, belts, and shoes are a surefire way to be on-point with some emerald green this fall.
The Infamous Tartan
Tartans are nothing new to men’s style. However, this fall, tartans are making an appearance not only in sport coats, but also in pants, vests, shirts, and accessories.
Tartan patterns are one of the most difficult things to coordinate successfully in a man’s outfit. In fact, anything with a bold pattern usually is considered a statement piece. So, if you are going to make a statement with tartan, pair it with more traditional hues in pants or a jacket and carry off this must-have look with ease.
Shawl-Collared Sweater
Growing up, my father had cedar trunks full of beautiful sweaters in our home. He would often tell me that you can never have enough sweaters! Those words have stuck with me to this day. If you have seen my closet, you can easily see that I have carried on this tradition with an obsession for anything knitted! But, my personal favourite is a shawl-collared cardigan – the perfect item of clothing to layer with this fall!
These are easy to take off or layer back on when you get cold. It is a great substitute for a sport jacket and can be dressed up with a shirt and tie or dressed down with denim. Shawl-collared cardigans come in a variety of textiles and are more commonly made with cotton or wool.
A shawl-collared cardigan should be a staple in every man’s wardrobe and is a must-have for this season!
Helpful Tip: Unless the garment is soiled, the best way to freshen up your sweaters – especially wool – is to hang them outside on a cool evening. You may be surprised to know that a natural fiber like wool self-cleans itself when you allow a little crisp air to blow through it. Your garment will then have a fresh smell, ready for the next wearing.
Felt Hats
Hats, hats, and more hats, please! Long overdue, hats are back as an accessory to adorn the heads of modern day men. There used to be a day when a man would not leave the house without finishing off his outfit with a well-crafted head covering. Over the past couple of years, you have seen hats like the wool felt fedora with a firm, wide brim emerging with the same classic style. But, keep on the lookout as new modern versions of this style are now on the scene! The new modern style may have a smaller brim, or the brim may be unconstructed, allowing the brim to lay down a little more all around the head (instead of having a firm-ridged look like its classic version).
Although not for everyone, these hats are a great way to accessorize an outfit. Keep the colours to black, greys, and brown to play it safe. Or, if you want to consider a coloured hat in order to spice things up, try emerald green!
Leather Gloves
There are always a few accessories like watches, shoes, and cufflinks that instantly make an outfit classy. But, you can also really make an impact on your overall image with some leather gloves. Black leather gloves with top sticking are an easy addition that sets off your outfit. However, the richness and variety of browns definitely have a more attractive appeal. Personally, a thin leather driving glove is the way to go for me (with or without the fast sports car). Whatever you choose, you cannot go wrong by sporting this look. Trust me when I say your hands will love you for it!
Remember that what you choose to wear is an expression of who you are. How we dress every day tells a story. What will be your story for Fall 2016 and beyond?
